At noon, with a short time difference, they will start their course at this year’s Roland Garros Stefanos Tsitsipas and the Maria Sakkari. The two Greek tennis players will participate for the seventh time in the main draw of the Paris Grand Slam with an ambition to overcome.
Tsitsipas is the one who, according to the schedule, will start his effort first, aiming to reach the final of a major event again. His opponent will be Giri Veseli (No. 452), with whom he meets for the first time in their career.
The match is the second game to be played on the center court, Philippe Chatrier, and is expected to start after 1:30 p.mas soon as Arina Sabalenka’s game with Marta Kostyuk ends.
Stefanos Tsitsipas entered this year’s Grand Slams strongly, reaching the final of the Australian Open, where he was defeated by Novak Djokovic in a thrilling match.
In Paris he is at least chasing a return to form, having been knocked out in the fourth round by Holger Rune last year. In the previous two years, however, he had impressed, reaching the semi-finals (2020) and the final (2021), with Novak Djokovic stopping him both times.
However, his path is expected to be difficult, since if he reaches the quarter-finals his most likely opponent is Carlos Alcarath, while in the semi-finals he will most likely find Nole in front of him once again.
Sakkari is also for the crossing
Aiming to get back on track, he traveled to Paris and Maria Sakkari. The 27-year-old champion reached the semi-finals in 2021 when she was stopped by Barbora Krejcikova and is looking for success again.
In this year’s premiere, he will face her Karolina Mutsova (No. 42), in Suzanne Leglen, around 14:00, right after the end of Karen Katsanov’s match with Constant Lestienne. Mutsova leads the head-to-head with two wins from three games.
The most recent, in fact, was last year in the second round of Roland Garros, where the Czech had won with relative ease 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4). In 2021, Moutsova comfortably prevailed in the “16” of Madrid with 6-0, 7-6(9), 5-7, while Sakkari’s only victory was in 2016, with 6-4, 6-1 in Egypt.
