Who will lift the Europa League trophy? Sevilla and Roma face each other at the “Puskas Arena” in Budapest (22:00, Cosmote Sport) with the goal of the big trophy.
Sevilla is in yet another final in… its own competition, since it is the all-time winner with six trophies and even counts 6/6 conquests (2005–06, 2006–07, 2013–14, 2014–15, 2015–16, 2019– 20), I was unbeaten in the finals. At the same time, Roma are looking for back-to-back European titles, having won the Europa Conference League last season. In fact, it was their first European after 61 years (it took the Exhibition Cup in 1960–61), while they have lost two finals (Champions Cup in 1983–84 and UEFA Cup in 1990–91).
The Andalusians started their European journey from the Champions League groups where they finished 3rd, leaving behind Copenhagen. So, in the Europa League, Sevilla initially overcame the obstacle of Eindhoven, followed by Fenerbahce, Manchester United and in the semi-finals that of Juventus.
The Romans, for their part, as winners of the Conference League, participated in the Europa groups. Their last-gasp win over Ludogorets 3-1 at the Olimpico sealed qualification for Jose Mourinho’s side as runners-up behind Betis. In the knockouts, the “glamorossi” threw out Salzburg, Sociedad, Feyenoord and in the “4” Leverkusen, reaching the final.
The two teams have met three times, with Roma winless. Of course, the two matches are friendlies, while they have faced each other in the 2019/20 season in the “16” with Sevilla winning 2-0 and qualifying. Let’s say that Spanish and Italian teams have faced each other 13 times in European finals. In 9 cases, including the three most recent, the Spanish won! The winner of the final secures a ticket to next season’s Champions League groups.
In the purely competitive matches for Sevilla, Mendiliber does not count the suspended left back Marcos Acuña and Telles will logically play in his place. As for Roma, back-half Karsdorp and stopper Koumbula are injured. Dybala is in but he will play for a while, 20 to 30 minutes as Mourinho said, while Spinazola and Pellegrini are ready.
Seville: Bono – Navas, Bande, Gudely, Teles – Rakitic, Fernando – Ocampos, Suso, Hill – En Nesiri.
Roma: Rui Patricio – Mancini, Smalling, Ibanez – Celik, Cristante, Matic, Spinazzola – El Saraoui, Pellegrini – Abraham.
Referee: Anthony Taylor (England)
