Olympiacos is the Greek Cup winner, its third men’s title this year

by

Olympiacos SF.P. is the 2023 Greek Men’s Table Tennis Cup Winner. In yesterday’s (04/06) final in the federal hall of the Peace and Friendship Stadium, they defeated Panathinaikos 3-0 and closed the 2022-2023 competition year with a historic treble (generally in the sport) given that they had previously won the Greek and European championships Trophy.

With two of the foreign athletes in its composition, as well as the main player in our national men’s team, Giorgos Stamatouros, whom he did not have in the A1 championship, he was favorite for the championship and confirmed it with the second Greek Cup in a row.

On the other hand, the effort of Panathinaikos was also very good, which this year emerged as the winner of the Attica Cup and with an all-Greek trio claimed the best in the Greek Cup, where they were also last year in the decisive match for the gold medal.

The final was broadcast live on the internet through the EFOEPA channel on YouTube

The bronze medal went to OEA Thessaloniki, which defeated Aris Nikias 3-1 in the “small” final, so the ranking in the first three places was exactly the same as in the corresponding event in 2022.

Seven teams took part in the Men’s Hellenic Cup (the minimum number for women was not met), competing in a progressive knockout table and a full classification. Olympiacos and Panathinaikos, who were number 1 and 2 respectively in the favorites, reached the final scoring two victories with 3-0. Piraeus against Aris Voulas and OEA Thessaloniki and Athenians against AS Gymnasium and Aris Nikias.

In the quarter-final round Olympiakos coach Giorgos Christoforakis had used Tassos Riniotis and Sokratis Gianoutsos. Panathinaikos, on the contrary, lined up the same trio as in the final in all matches (Konstantinos Angelakis, Konstantinos Konstantinopoulos, Nikos Antonadis) and had Nikos Zervas as their technical guide.

The all-season unbeaten Olympiacos had the odds on their side and the opening match was crucial in whether their task would be made easier or if Panathinaikos would chase the breakthrough with claims. And that’s because Angelakis was the big threat with three wins this year against Olympiakos’ foreigners. Finally, Stamatouros was completely ready to help this year only in the Cup, he took the victory with 3-1 sets and with less pressure now, Olympiacos reached the final 3-0 in about 1.5 hours with two more wins from Croatian Tomislav Pukar and Portugal’s João Monteiro, who came from the Durban World Individual Championships.

The development of the final Panathinaikos-Olympiakos 0-3 in detail:

Konstantinos Angelakis-Giorgos Stamatouros 1-3 (6-11, 11-5, 4-11, 4-11)

Nikos Antoniadis-Tomislav Pucar 1-3 (2-11, 12-10, 7-11, 6-11)

Konstantinos Konstantinopoulos-Joao Monteiro 0-3 (4-11, 7-11, 6-11)

For the 3rd place, two teams, who this year rose from the A2 to the A1 national category, competed. Aris Nikias took the lead when Stavros Vrettakos achieved a remarkable 3-2 set win against Anestis Yovas. But the continuation belonged to OEA Thessaloniki, who prevailed with 3-1. Two victories were achieved by the Bulgarian Konstantin Parapanov (with 3-0 sets over Ilias Michaelides and Vrettakos), while in between Anestis Kariofyllidis prevailed with a 3-0 set against Fotis Arvanitis. Pantelis Eleftheriadis sits on the bench of the team from Oreokastro.

The 5th place was won by AS Gymnasium, winning the last match of the program of Athena Magoufana with 3-2, while Aris Voulas was ranked 7th since yesterday.

The awards were presented by the mayor of Piraeus Yiannis Moralis and the president of EFOEPA Kostas Papageorgiou, while the president of Amateur Olympiakos Michalis Kountouris was also present at the SEF.
