Naomi Osaka claims to be ready to defend non-Australian Open title

by

Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka, 24, who admitted to having suffered from mental health problems in 2021, declared on Saturday (15) that she feels good and ready to defend her title at the Australian Open.

“I’m recovering pretty fast. I feel as good as I can at the moment,” she told reporters in Melbourne. “But we athletes always have a problem, it’s impossible to play a Grand Slam without feeling something,” he added.

Osaka returns to the place where it achieved its victories in 2019 and 2021, after a long hiatus during which it declared that it was experiencing depression.

Champion of four Grand Slams, the Japanese seems to be in top form. She won three matches at the Melbourne tournament last week before withdrawing from semi-final play with abdominal discomfort.

Naomi Osaka will make her first match at the Australian Open against Colombian Camila Osorio (53rd in the world).

“Participating in the Australian Open means a lot to me. Of course it’s not the first Grand Slam I’ve won, but I have the feeling that starting the year here will give me momentum for the rest of the season,” he said.

The draw foresees the possibility that in the round of 16 she could face the number 1 in the world, the Australian Ashleigh Barty, 25. But Osaka said he doesn’t want to think about that just yet.

“I’m not the type of person who watches sweepstakes. I just watch the person I have to face right now. Yesterday someone told me about Barty and I said, ‘Don’t talk to me’. I just want to get past the first round,” said the tennis player.
