The 28-year-old Greek-Australian emphasized that he was even thinking to kill himself, while he says that he drank a lot alcohol and made use of drugs, something that alienated his friends and family. In fact, he added that he even went to psychiatric hospital, in order to solve his problems.

“I honestly thought about whether I wanted to kill myself. I lost at Wimbledon. I woke up and my dad was sitting on the bed crying. This was the big awakening for me. I felt like I can’t go on doing this. I went to a mental hospital in London to figure out my problems.

I am proud to say that I have completely turned around and have a completely different perspective on everything, I don’t take a single moment for granted. I want to be able to reach my full potential and smile. This life is beautiful.

That pressure, having that expectation on you, I couldn’t handle it. I hated the kind of person I was. I drank, I did drugs, I lost my relationship with my family, I pushed all my close friends away.

You could tell I was in pain. My whole arm was covered in scars. That’s why I got my arm sleeve at Wimbledon. To cover it all” were some of his words Kyrgiou published today.
