The first two names of Greek athletes in the world ranking of table tennis, as well as two federal coaches, are “present” at the European Games in Poland, which are foreseen and regulated by the European Olympic Committees and, as in Baku, Azerbaijan, 2015 and Minsk, Belarus in 2019, they will aim to achieve more than they can this year.
Panagiotis Gionis, Yiannis Sgouropoulos, Katerina Toliou and Elisabeth Terpou have been in Poland since Tuesday morning together with the two national coaches, Kostas Vatsaklis of the men and Giorgos Karytsa of the women. They settle in the Village and do their first training.
They traveled with many more Greek champions from other sports, as well as the former president of E.F.O.E.P.A. and current general secretary of EOE, Manolis Kolymbadis.
The 3rd European Games run from 21/06 to 02/07, while the tournament of the sport will take place at the “Hutnik Arena” in Krakow from 23/06 to 01/07.
It includes the events of the Olympic Games, i.e. team, singles and mixed doubles, only the Greek representatives can participate in the singles. The draw is scheduled for Thursday, “knockout” tableau from the beginning foresees the system of conduct in all competitions. For seeding, the current week’s world rankings will be calculated.
Gionis makes his own … streak in the institution with a third participation, in fact in Minsk he experienced the highest honor and pride of being the standard bearer of the Greek mission! Sgouropoulos and Toliou had the pleasure of competing four years ago in Belarus, while Terpou will experience this great experience for the first time in her career.
In the singles, 49 athletes and 51 athletes are going to compete. In the team, we will have from 12 countries in men and women and in the mixed doubles 16 pairs. All together the entries are from 32 countries.
We remind you that Sgouropoulos, Toliou and Terpou have declared their participation in the World Table Tennis Contender in Croatia, which will be held June 26-July 2. However, they will only compete normally in Zagreb if they are disqualified in the first days of singles at the European Games.
