THE Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced Tuesday that it has asked Israel for a second time to extradite a former official accused of torture in the Latin American state.

The head of state explained that he had written to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asking him to help extradite Thomas Ceron, former head of the investigative services for criminal cases (2014-2016) during the government of his predecessor Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018). ).

Mr. Ceron had led the highly controversial investigation into the case of the 43 students who disappeared in 2014 in Iguala (southwestern Mexico).

The current government accuses him of torturing eyewitnesses and tampering with evidence and believes he went to Israel to avoid an investigation into his handling of the investigation.

“It is not possible for Israel to protect a torturer, whatever the circumstances,” said Mr. López Obrador yesterday, during the morning press conference he gives every day.

Mr Cheron has previously denied any wrongdoing.

The Mexican president – who had initially submitted a request to the Israeli authorities to proceed with the extradition of the former official in 2021 – also emphasized that he expects the Mexican Israeli community to support the effort to secure the extradition of Thomas Sharon.

The Mexican government said last year that the previous government’s involvement in the 2014 disappearance of the young students at the federal, state and local levels was a “state crime.”

Israel’s embassy in Mexico declined to comment on President López Obrador’s statements.
