One of the practices that has reached the NBA so high, is the league’s ability to readjust the rules to make the sport as spectacular as possible but also as “fair”.
The main topic of discussion right now among people in the league is his flopping, i.e. the players’ attempt to provoke a foul, what is called “theatre” in football. As it stands, flopping is considered a simple offense in the NBA, and carries no special in-game punishment beyond a change of possession. Nevertheless, it is expected that there will be a… Europeanization of this regulation.
In particular, the league is expected to test during the Summer League a new regulation, according to which flopping will attract a penalty one shot and possession for the opposing team, just as it happens in Europe. The only difference is that in the NBA, the referees don’t have to call the foul immediately, stopping the game. Instead, they can wait until the next neutral phase to take the penalty.
A player who violates the rule will be penalized with a technical penalty. However, flopping will not count as a personal foul or result in an ejection, the league notes.
