Stavrina Garifallou was the one who stood out on the second day of competition among the three Greek entries in the qualifying rounds of the men’s dueling sword and the women’s exercise sword.
The 17-year-old fencer qualified for the main table of 64 of the exercise sword which will be held on Wednesday, July 26 and thus she will complete her last year as a junior by participating in the final phase of the top division fencing event.
Both Katerina Kontochristopoulou (AOX Aegaleo) and Garifallou (AOX Aegaleo) made a very good start in the pools with 3/2 and 3/3 in wins/losses respectively and secured a place in the knockouts, directly on the board of 64. However, just like in the European tournament in Philippopolis, they unfortunately happened to play each other, with the only good thing being that Greece would have secured a place in the main table of 64 in the women’s epee again after 2017 and Kontochristopoulou’s 39th place finish in Leipzig, Germany. Garifallou was ultimately the one who prevailed 15-6 in the Greek “civil war” and passed to the next phase, while Kontochristopoulou completed her presence in Milan with 69th place.
In the men’s dueling sword, 17-year-old Konstantinos Karambasis (AO Ariston Paanias) was the only representative of our country. In the pool he managed to score three wins in six games and moved to the main table of 256. In his first knockout game, however, the Giorgos Passa athlete was defeated 15-10 by the South African Sergey Losevsky and ended his presence with the 163rd place in the world.
