Vertainen, 24, is a former Finnish junior international and has won the Finnish top-flight championship three times with the country’s most successful club, HJK. Having transferred to the Scottish Premier League with St. Johnstone, Vertainen then scored 17 goals in 30 games while on loan at Linfield in the Northern Ireland Premiership last season.

Born in Espoo, Vertainen came through HJK’s youth academy and made his first-team debut in January 2017. Vertainen went on to score 13 goals with six assists in 76 appearances across four seasons at HJK as the team won three times the Finnish championship (2017, 2018, 2020) and twice the Finnish Cup (2017, 2020). Vertainen made five appearances in total in UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League qualifiers during his HJK career.

Leaving HJK for Ilves in January 2021, Vertainen scored four goals in 11 appearances in the first half of the 2021 Veikkausliiga season and earned a move to the Scottish Premier League with St. Johnstone in September 2021.

Vertainen made seven league appearances in the first half of the 2021/22 season for St. Johnstone and spent the second half on loan at Linfield in the Northern Ireland Premiership, where he scored four goals with one assist in 10 appearances, helping the team to the title. Vertainen extended his loan at Linfield until the 2022/23 season, scoring 19 goals with six assists in 43 appearances in all competitions, including three appearances between UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League qualifiers.

At the international level, Vertainen represented Finland in the U18, U19, and U21 national teams.
