Final titles after eight years of collaboration fell tonight between Ilias Zouro and national team of Georgia.
With a statement issued today by the Basketball Federation of the country, it announced that after the conclusion of the contract between the two sides, no agreement was finally reached for a new cooperation, with Georgia goodbye the Greek technician, giving thanks at the same time for his contribution to the country’s basketball!
Let us recall that under the instructions of the 57-year-old coach, Georgia participated for the first time in its history in final stage of the World Cup!
The announcement of the national Georgia:
“With the end of the World Cup, the contract of the coach of the National Georgia ended, thus closing the era of Ilias Zouros in our national team. The Greek coach says goodbye to the Georgian national team at the highest level, which he climbed with his great value and after overcoming the first group stage, he entered the 16 best teams in the world.
Ilias Zouros holds the record as the longest serving coach of the National Georgia and his achievements remain unparalleled. While there have been important milestones in Georgia’s modern basketball history, such as the transition from “B” to “A” category, our EuroBasket debut and participation in four consecutive European Championships, the opportunity to compete in the World Championship is a breakthrough feat.
This unprecedented feat was accomplished under the leadership and guidance of Ilias Zouros. Zouros took over as coach of the Georgia national team after Igor Kokoskov, who in turn led our team for 7 years and after the end of his contract, he took over the future European champions, the national team of Slovenia. In his first season, Ilias Zouros led our National team to an early qualification to EuroBasket 2017.
Viktor Sanikitze, both individually and on behalf of the Basketball Federation, expresses his heartfelt appreciation to Ilias Zouro for his outstanding contributions during his eight-year journey with our National Team. The emotions and joy caused by the Georgian national team under the leadership of Ilias Zouros are immeasurable and will leave a lasting impact on Georgian basketball fans for years to come,” said the relevant announcement of the Georgian National Team.
On his part, Mr Greek coach said goodbye to the Georgian Federation, thanking them both for this fantastic eight-year journey, but also for the goals they achieved together:
“The last 8 years have been a fantastic journey for me with the national team of Georgia! I want to thank you all for the great memories and the Georgia Basketball Federation for their trust and support!
Working and developing with all these talented players over the years has been a privilege and I feel honored to have represented such a wonderful and beautiful country! All the hard work and sacrifices have paid off and being in the top 16 countries in the world shows that discipline and focus is everything!
