“The Council of the EuroLeague Coaches Association is surprised to learn that our member Sergio Scariolo has today been informed by Virtus Bologna of the unilateral termination of his contract.
The Union was created to protect not only the professional rights, but also the prestige of EuroLeague coaches since seven of them were fired in the first quarter of a season, starting with the 2018/19 season. The decisions of the specific teams gave us the motivation to create the dispute resolution center in Switzerland together with the EuroLeague.
Virtus Bologna decided to fire the coach before the season even started. Every club has the right to make decisions regarding what is best for their future, regarding which coach they fire or hire. However, the Coaches Association believes this decision was an act of unprecedented disrespect for an amazing professional who has been coaching at the highest level for many years, is a finalist in the Olympics, but has won Eurobasketball and the World Cup.
Every contract has obligations and responsibilities, but it also has rights for each side and that’s why we expected Virtus Bologna to fulfill their obligations to Sergio Scariolo.
