The decision of TAIPED to close the Olympic Stadium is causing serious concern among experts. The emeritus professor of NTUA, Panagiotis Karydis speaking to “Nation» he wonders why this problem was discovered so suddenly and why if it is so widespread then why no one had spotted it until now. Following this reasoning, he concludes that the problem is clearly due to improper maintenance of the shelter.
“There could be the possibility of reducing crowds or events if the problem was not so severe and widespread. But if the problem is so serious, was it suddenly discovered? Had no one spotted it when it wasn’t so widespread?“, says Panagiotis Karydis and adds:
“It is most likely that the facilities have not been properly maintained. But the effects of lack of maintenance are also gradual, extensive corrosion is not something that happens overnight.”
Karydis explains that these structures have oscillations and their materials exhibit fatigue…
“Something similar to the ships that were cut in half and sank in the past. From the millions of times these structures oscillate, the material loses its strength and elasticity and eventually breaks.”he mentions and adds that one of the biggest risks that exist for these constructions is corrosion, clearly emphasizing that it is unsystematic maintenance…
“It is due to improper and systematic maintenance. Then we notice that the welds, the joints, the bolts, all the connections, etc., rust.
