New statements about the signing of a new contract with the Bucks were given by John Antetokounmpo.
In them he stated that initially there was no logic for that to happen (before Lillard’s move, he tended to flee the team), but eventually extended to 2028.
A decisive role in this decision was played by his brother, Thanasis, whom he also called as… GM of the family. Thus, the 28-year-old star will lead Milwaukee for the next five years!
John’s statements in detail:
“There was no logic in signing, as I said earlier, however after that statement I had a conversation with my family, that is… GM Thanasis Antetokounmpo. He told me you never know what’s in store for you, so I had to sign this extension. He also told me that I can sign another one in 2026, that this is the smartest thing I can do. I trust his judgment, but that’s not all.
I had to take my mind off this situation. I had to stop thinking about her. I don’t want the media to talk about my contract, to say if I will stay or if I will leave. I listened to my heart, I wanted to stay here. I don’t want people, when we lose a match, to turn around and say “John is upset, John doesn’t like what’s going on, John will leave”. Now we can only talk about basketball.
How do we get better? How will we build good habits? How will we stay longer together on the floor? How can we best defend ourselves? How do we get in the right spots and help Lillard, Middleton and all the guys perform better? Our minds will be strictly on basketball. I’ve done it this way before in 2020 and it helped because I didn’t have anything to think about. I was not putting myself in a state of doubt. I’m here and I want to be successful with my teammates and win another championship.”
