A cheap defeat against Rennes for the misguided Panathinaikos

by

Defeat (1-2) in a crushing way for him Panathinaikos from Ren. The “trefoil” missed the opportunities and at the same time the match against the French in Leoforo for the 3rd matchday of the Europa League.

The two “cold” goals he conceded in the first minutes of each half, from his header Guiry (7′) and his heel Calimuendo (49′) they gave the victory to the visitors, while the goal-penalty of Ioannidis in the 60′, which Palasios won again put the “clover” in the trick. However, the effort fell short, with Mladenovic hitting the post with a cross just before the end and Mancini missing a great chance later in the period.

So, Jovanovic’s teamwhich dropped to 2nd place (with a game more than Villarreal and Maccabi) with 4, giving Rennes a chance to go 1st in Group 6, could not make a qualification jump.

The group score

The 3rd matchday:

Panathinaikos-Ren 1-2

Villarreal-Maccabi Haifa (6/12)

The next (4th) matchday (09/11):

Rennes-Panathinaikos

Maccabi Haifa-Villarreal

In the coach’s mind

Loyal to 4-3-3, Jovanovic, who made just one change in relation to the recent derby. Brignoli was in goal, Senkefeld and Jedvaj were the central defense duo, with the Croatian taking Ruben’s place in the starting line-up. Vaiannidis and Mladenovic were the backs. He returned to the midfield and together with Cerin-Djuricic completed the trio he was in the center. Palasios and Bernard were on the “wings”, with Ioannidis on the attack line.

With 4-3-3 and Ren. Mandada was in goal, Omari and Belosian in the center of defense, Assignon and Triffier were the two backs. Matic, Burizot and Le Fe the trio in the midfield, with Guiry and Blas being on the “wings”, while Calimuendo was at the top of the attack.

The match

Panathinaikos, getting a boost from his crowd, entered the match with momentum and managed to create an early phase and have an incomplete attempt. In the 4th minute, in an attack that started from a steal by Bernard, Vagiannidis made the turn from the right, but the ball went a little behind the place where Djuricic wanted it. Three minutes later, Mr Palasios he carried the ball, teamed up with Ioannidis, attacked head on and his shot from the edge of the area sent the ball just wide.

As if that wasn’t enough, the “clover” conceded a “cold” goal in the 7th minute, with Le Fe making a nice cross, the Panathinaikos defense couldn’t clear with Senkefeld and Vagiannidis, with Guiry to score with a header.

While Panathinaikos was trying to find its footing, Rennes almost scored a second goal with the same star player, as his shot Guiry sent the ball to the left post of Brignoli in the 14th minute.

In a somewhat unorthodox way, Panathinaikos found its first phase after 0-1, with Gedvai to make a solo effort and serve to Bernard who shot at the bodies. In the 24th minute, the Greek team won a free kick just outside the area, with Cerin executing well (from where he recently scored with the Slovenian national team) and Mandada clearing.

Panathinaikos created a classic chance and lost in the 33rd minute, with Palacios bringing Assignon along from the left and turn for Djuricic who had a very bad finish almost from the height of the penalty.

As in 41′, with Bernard advancing and turning for Ioannidis who executed from the heart of the opposition defense but the ball was countered and ended up in Mandada.

In the next minute Vaiannidis cooperated with Djuricicbut the Serb’s shot was not enough to beat Mandada.

In a manner similar to the first half, Panathinaikos was hurt in the second half. He came in strong, had intensity in the game and conceded a goal out of nowhere. Reeder committed a foul from the right and o Calimuendo scored a … bum goal with a heel.

THE Panathinaikos went to make a reaction in the 55′, with Bernard executing a corner from the left and Ioannidis making blocked header the opposing goalkeeper.

Finally, Jovanovic’s team got back on track in the 60th minute, with Palacios to win a penalty from pressing Assignon. Ioannidis executed coollysending the ball into the net.

Panathinaikos again entered the bay for a good result and in the final stretch they played their spares, with Jovanovic putting fresh legs into the match (Aitor, Mancini and Vilena in, Bernard, Palacios and Cerin out).

In the 66th minute, the “greens” launched a nice counterattack, but they messed up in the final pass, with Ioannidis trying to find Djuricic and the opposing defense cutting. If that didn’t happen, the Serb would almost come face to face with the French goalkeeper.

Rennes came close to making it 3-1 in the 70th minute, as their quick counter-attack caught the Panathinaikos defense unprepared, but fortunately for the “clover” Brignoli said “no” to Calimuendo with a terrific intervention.

Two minutes later, Mancini turned in from the right, but Aitor was unable to convert from the penalty spot. Jovanovic’s team had started to find a rhythm and in the 73′, Mladenovic and Ioannidis worked together, but in the two attempts of the Greek forward, the ball found Belosian.

The hourglass began to empty, the remaining forces and ideas were not abundant, but Panathinaikos did not give up. With Ioannidis sending the ball over the opponent’s goal at 90’+2′ with a header from Aitor’s foul.

Panathinaikos fought until the last second, literally, and that’s how they almost got a point in the final. Mladenovic made a cunning cross, the ball found the crossbar and Mancini in the development of the phase did not find the goal from a good position, but the legs of the opponent.

The film of the match via sport-fm.gr

MVP: He stood out Guiry. He paved the way to victory in the 7th minute in Rennes. He had a post in the 14th minute and in general very good contact with the ball, creating several “clover” problems. Very good image again from Brinioli for Panathinaikos, even though his team had more finals. Perhaps the best appearance was made by Palasios for the “greens”. He created a lot of problems for Assignon, won the penalty 1-2 and had good decisions in the game.

Whistle: There is no serious refereeing error, but at the mercy of VAR. The Portuguese needed the help of technology to give Palacios the penalty. Some mistakes in the disciplinary control were made. From there, all good.
