Violent reactions to the World Cup in Saudi Arabia

by

Gianni Infantino’s announcement that Saudi Arabia is the only candidate which was submitted for the World Cup in 2034 and therefore will take over the organization caused strong reactions.

As happened with Qatar, the World Cup will return to Asia in 11 years, with international public opinion reacting to this development.

Human rights organizations reacted strongly to FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s confirmation that the 2034 World Cup will be held in Saudi Arabia.

The first to send a message after the FIFA president’s announcement was Amnesty International, which through Steve Cockburn (head of economic and social justice) underlined: “It must be ready to stop the bidding process if human rights violations are not credibly addressed.”

The Human Rights Watchfor his part, described the holding of the World Cup in Saudi as a “shame”.

“Saudi Arabia should not be rewarded for its repression,” said President Minky Warden, adding: “Independent monitoring of human rights in Saudi Arabia is not possible due to government repression.

It is impossible for FIFA to continuously monitor and inspect human rights in Saudi Arabia based on its own human rights policy.

FIFA is failing in its responsibility to the world of football to conduct the World Cup competition and selection processes in an ethical, transparent, objective and impartial manner.”
