Disappointing PAOK, dragged away by Benfica

by

A heartbreaking appearance was made by PAOK in Lisbon and lost 94-72 to Benfica for the second matchday of the BCL groups, “throwing away” the excess that he had done in the premiere at the headquarters of Galatasaray.

His team Foti Takianou “chased” the score almost throughout the match and didn’t even keep up the pretense at the end. No one was saved from the “wreck”, except maybe him Fredrickson with 16 points and 6 assists. Almeida with 27 and Carter with 26 points the “executioners” of the “double-header”.

The match

PAOK didn’t do anything right at the beginning of the match and Benfica reached 9-1 with Douglas as the protagonist, while the “black and white” didn’t even hit the shots. Fridriksson with personal actions reduced to 9-5, but the frivolities of Fotis Takianou’s players made it 12-5 and 17-12, despite the efforts of the Icelandic international guard. The wrong actions of the Lusitanians helped Beliauskas to reduce to 17-15 at the end of the first quarter.

Fridriksson’s three-pointer at the start of the second period made it 17-18 and PAOK now maintained +1. Tsiakmas brought +2 for the “double-header”, but a 6-0 run for Benfica brought it 29-25 for the “eagles” and Carter made it 34-28. PAOK responded with a 7-0 run for 38-39 with Beliauskas as the protagonist and Fridrikson brought the score to 40-41 at the end of the half. The Portuguese had 3/13 three-pointers, 11/16 shots and 18 rebounds and PAOK 9/13 shots and 12 rebounds.

Carter and Almeida went on an 11-0 run for Benfica at the start of the third quarter to make it 51-41 for the Eagles on poor defense by Fotis Takianos in that period. PAOK found the solutions in the Portuguese basket, but the home team’s long shots kept them in double-digit differences, while Harrison was “loaded” with fouls and could not threaten. Fredrickson and McNeese cut the deficit to single digits twice, and Tsiakma’s 3-pointer made it 68-60 at the end of the quarter.

Benfica’s quick 3-0 run made it 71-60 at the start of the fourth period and with an 8-0 run with Carter doing whatever he wanted the match went 81-63, with Takiano’s players “breaking” and they can’t get the offensive rebounds either. Douglas’ three-pointer brought the score to 85-65 and gave the “free throw” to the Thessalonians. Tsairelis reduced to 85-68, but Benfica with individual scores reached the final 94-72.

Ten minutes: 17-15, 40-41, 69-60, 94-72
