Greek journalism and the basketball world are mourning the loss of Vassilis Georgiouwith the legendary speaker “leaving” on Friday night at the age of 86.
Through an announcement, Mr YOU WERE expressed his sincere condolences, stating among other things that his voice will never be forgotten.
The announcement of ESAKE:
“The members of the Board of Directors of ESAKE and its president Mr. Evangelos Galatsopoulos express their deep sorrow for the loss of Vassilis Georgios and their sincere condolences to his wife Katerina and his son Sotiris.
Vassilis Georgiou served basketball as an athlete (he played for Skagiopoulio, Apollon Patras, Triton Athens and Panachaki) and was the first qualified journalist of our beloved sport on television and radio.
His radio description of the final of the 1968 European Cup Winners’ Cup between AEK and Slavia Prague with Union as the winner was historic and that is why Philippos Syrigos, the late and great journalist as well, called him “Vebo of Basketball”.
His voice in 1968 had… traveled the triumph of AEK all over Greece and will always accompany our memories. We will never forget Vassilis Georgiou for his passion for basketball.
In memory of Vassilis Georgiou, a minute’s silence will be observed at all meetings of the 5th regular season of the Stoiximan Basket League.”
