Poget: “Don’t try to see anything behind my words on Monday – If we qualify do I need a new contract? Yes”

by

THE Gustavo Poget caused “chaos” last Monday with his statements, with many interpreting from them that the Uruguayan coach intends to resign after the match with France (11/21).

However, before the start of the last training session, after clarifying that “he has paid rent until May”, he told reporters that he does not intend to leave, but that his statements were aimed at “to make sure that we will be more professional than now”.

At the same time, Mr Poget he also talked about being friendly with her New Zealand (17/11), stressing that it is very useful for the preparation of the National Team.

What he said in detail:

On his statement on Monday: “Please don’t say I want to leave, that I’m trying to leave. I’m trying to improve. Do I want a new training center? Yes. Do I want to play with all four stands open? Yes. Do I want to make sure we’re going to be more professional than we are now? Yes. Don’t try to see something behind my words on Monday, because there is nothing. If I qualify next week or in March, do I need a new contract? Yes. Maybe I’ll be the first coach to go to the Euros without a contract, but don’t say other things. I’ll be naive enough to have paid six months’ rent in advance and want to leave.”

For the match against New Zealand: “The team is very good. The atmosphere is fantastic, we train very well. We take the game very seriously, maybe we need a bit of motivation work because of the match conditions. If you ask me now, the team is ten out of ten.”

For the autographs from the kids and the public: “If I go back to February 2022 when we started and nobody was waiting for us or watching the training shows the connection with the world is fantastic. It’s impressive for the players to see all this world waiting for them. We want to give them something back and that is the main goal, the qualification to the final phase of the Euro”.

For the utility of friendly: “We continue to grow, I want to play with the strongest team. Tomorrow, those who do not start in the game, will train in the morning. We are doing it to prepare for the games in March, because we want to go to the Euros. We will use this opportunity to train regularly, mentally, to integrate the new players. I will line up the best team for the win.”

As for whether he aims to find new faces in the two matches: “Maybe tomorrow there will be one, after Tuesday we will line up the best team, thinking about March. We have a condition with yellow cards and we don’t want to lose players for the March matches. We’ll see how we manage it. We are focused on tomorrow’s game.”

For how to deal with the two opponents: “No, they are completely different games. Against France we will try to see how we can deal with such strong teams.”
