The San Marino is perhaps the most traditional punching bag in the UEFA qualifiers, but as of today 30 years ago he completely surprised the England.
At November 17, 1993the “three lions” had gone to Bologna to face the bottom of the group as part of the final match of the USA’s World Cup qualifiers.
The late Graham Taylor’s side were in dire straits as they were -2 to the Netherlands and needed a combination of results to avoid missing out on the finals for the first time since 1978.
The English were the big favorites but they would be surprised even more, as after 8.3 seconds and a mistake in defense, they would be behind in the score by Gaultieri!
Of course, the shock wasn’t that big. The British would comfortably turn the match around, with Ian Wright’s frame standing out in the final 7-1but that was not enough.
You see, the Netherlands beat Poland 3-1 to secure qualification behind Norway…
30 years ago today:
Graham Taylor’s England travel to San Marino, concede after 8.3 seconds, and by full-time the gaffer’s reign is all but over.
I don’t like that.
