Super League 1: “Trials” for AEK, Olympiakos and the PAOK-Panathinaikos derby

by

The 22nd game in Super League 1 continues with three matches, after the away victories achieved yesterday by Volos at the home of Aris and PAS Giannina against Panetolikos.

The program opens at 3 at noon, as AEK welcomes Apollon Smyrnis to OAKA.

AEK failed to maintain its unbeaten run for eight away games and lost in Thessaloniki to Aris. Added to its recent home failures, AEK has lost four of its last six league games, while losing two of its first 14. Within four days it lost to Volos and Aris for the first time in a row in the league. At home it has lost the last three, equaling the negative record in its history and will try to stop it here. It has been two months and a day since he defeated Panathinaikos.

On Sunday he suffered the defeat in Ioannina with Marco Grote on the bench, while the same happened on Wednesday in Rizoupoli from PAOK, although Gianluca Festa was on the bench again. The Italian returned, after an absence of five games in the technical leadership. Apollon was left without a goal for the seventh game, equalizing the worst series in its history and now it is threatened with a new one.

Two hours later, at 17:15, Olympiakos is tested at the headquarters of Ionikos. After the 1-1 draw in Toumba, Olympiakos managed to easily prevail over Panetolikos in Karaiskaki, scoring two goals before completing four minutes on the Faliraki stadium.

It was the seventh consecutive victory of Piraeus at home, while away from home they come from three draws and will look for the first “double” from December 15. The “red and white” remains undefeated in the season, while with last season Martins’ team has reached 26 championship games and 13 away.

With four points in his last two games, Ionikos took a breath that was needed, as it came from five consecutive defeats. In fact, his only victory in the last eight was against Atromitos.

The program ends with the PAOK-Panathinaikos derby, after the other match was postponed at the same time Lamia-Asteras Tripolis.

PAOK enjoys a distance of more than five points from AEK, pressing firmly in second place, and welcomes Panathinaikos. Their duel comes just before the quarterfinals of the Cup, where of course PAOK has a difficult mission. For the first time since September, Panathinaikos suffered two consecutive defeats and with one victory and three defeats in its last five, it fell to fifth place in the standings, entering into adventures.

PAOK prevailed in the first round in Athens with 3-1, scoring three goals against Panathinaikos after three years. The “greens” won the two last year at home, but are the only ones in the last seven. In Toumba, Panathinaikos got three draws in its last four visits, but it has to win since May 2017, in the Playoffs then. Since then, PAOK has three wins and three draws.
