The former Paralympian Oscar Pistorius he will be released from prison in January, almost 11 years after killing his girlfriend.

THE Pistorius had shot shot her Riva Stenkamp on Valentine’s Day 2013, at his home in Pretoria South Africain a murder that had shocked the world.

The Department of Correctional Services decided on the conditional release of the now 37-year-old Pistoriuswho had claimed at his trial that he had mistaken his partner for an intruder in his home and had shot her.

The prosecution argued that the murder was premeditated and Pistorius shot her after an argument. He was initially found not guilty of murder and instead convicted of culpable homicide (the UK equivalent of manslaughter).

He was sentenced to five years in 2014 and was eventually released and placed under house arrest. A year later, that conviction was overturned when the Supreme Court of Appeal her South Africa found him guilty of murder. He was sentenced to six years in prison, which was later increased to 13 years and five months after the sentence was handed down “shockingly very forgiving”.

The parole board re-examined his case today after denying him parole in March. The decision to give him a second parole hearing came after his lawyer took his case to the Constitutional Court over errors the court made in calculating when the Pistorius he should be released from prison.

Initially, he had been told he could be released in August 2024, but being granted a second hearing was effectively seen as an admission of error by the appeals court.
