With Brescia completing the “puzzle” of the teams that will compete in the “8” stage and claim a ticket to the final-8, the group stage of the Champions League Men’s Water Polo has been completed tonight. The Italian team had virtually secured the ticket since midday, when Novi Beograd with three goals from Angelos Vlachopoulos defeated Sabadell in Spain 11-7. In the evening, Brescia did its duty, easily prevailing over the weak Steaua with 16-7 and “sealing” the privileged second place of the A’ group.
Following this, the eight teams that qualified are Novi Beograd, Brescia, Pro Reco, Olympiacos, Ferencvaros, Jadran Split, Barceloneta and Marseille. In the next phase, which starts in March (between the break for the European and World Championships), they will be divided into two groups of four and play home-and-away games, with the top two of each group advancing to the final-4.
The eight eliminated teams (Sambadel, Steaua, Jug Dubrovnik, Dynamo Tbilisi, Red Star, Giardan Herceg Novi, Spandau and Vouliagmeni) will continue in the Euro Cup and enter the Round of 16, along with the eight teams that qualify from the groups of the second inter-club competition (the last match is held on Saturday 9/12).
