Controversial phase commentary is back – Request for a police presence in the locker room

Following the government’s measures against violence, today the EPO also announced the measures to protect the referees, which were taken by the Professional Football Committee after the meeting.

Among the things reported by the EPO, it is known that the commentary of the disputed phases from the games of the Super League matchday is coming back with a relevant video which will be published, while it is pointed out that a police officer from the Sports Violence sub-directorate will be requested to be present in the locker room area. Finally, a meeting of the arbitrators with the relevant ministers will be requested.

The EPO states in detail:

The Professional Football Committee of the EPO, during its meeting today, dealt with the protection measures for the referees and took the following decisions.

• The minimum fines for defamatory judgments and statements against/against arbitration officials are increased. The change will take effect immediately if it receives the exceptional approval of FIFA and UEFA.

• Restoration of the commentary of the disputed phases by the KED with the publication of the video.

• The EPO will assist in the legal coverage of referees and assistant referees on a case-by-case basis and after cooperation and consultation with the referees.

• It will be requested that a police officer from the Sports Violence sub-division be present in the locker room area at SL1 games at all times.

• From the next competition season, harmonization with the applicable UEFA regulations for the protection of referees in case of defamatory judgments and statements.

• The EPO will request a meeting of the referees with the Minister of State Stavros Papastavrou, the Minister of Citizen Protection Yiannis Oikonomou and the Deputy Minister of Sports Yiannis Vroutsis.
