A set of six jerseys worn by Lionel Messi during the epic course of the national Argentinian at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, including the win over France in the final, sold for $7.8 million at auction by Sotheby’s.
The sale price, which includes fees and commissions (the final bid was $6.5 million), is lower than Sotheby’s estimate of $10 million, but according to the firm, it is “one of the highest for sports collectibles”, which captures the enthusiasm of wealthy collectors for these objects. The company did not disclose information about the bidder.
The record for her most expensive jersey ever sold at auctionit still…belongs to a jersey of the American basketball legend Michael Jordan, in the finals of his last NBA title with the Chicago Bulls in 1998 ($10.1 million in September 2022). Next in cost is the shirt worn by Diego Maradona, in the memorable quarter-final against England which he won 2-1 thanks to the “hand of God” and one of the most amazing goals of all time, in the 1986 World Cup (9 .3 million in May 2022).
It is noted that three offers followed one another for Messi’s jerseys during this online sale from November 30.
The jerseys with the famous blue and white stripes were worn by “Pulga” in the first halves of the group games against Saudi Arabia and Mexico, then against Australia and in the quarter-finals against the Netherlands, followed by Croatia and the historic final with France.
