Joint statement of the Unions of Players, Coaches and Referees: “Olympiacos’ quick reaction is a reference point”

by

Notice of support to Joseph Bisangwho received a racist comment in SEF, its players, coaches and referees made a joint Euroleague.

In this joint announcement, in fact, the above congratulated him Olympicfor his quick reaction to ban the fan in question from SEF for life.

The announcement in detail:

“The EuroLeague Coaches’ Association, the EuroLeague Players’ Association and the EuroLeague Referees’ Association condemn the racial discrimination recorded by a fan sitting courtside at Olympiacos’ game against Valencia in the hope that this incident can help EuroLeague fans to turn their backs on such behaviour.

We have witnessed, especially in recent years, an increase in verbal and non-verbal incidents towards players, coaches and referees. Abusive chants have become accepted and lines are regularly crossed. The fans make the EuroLeague special and their loyalty is more than appreciated.

We know our jobs are under the spotlight and positive criticism is always welcome, but there must be clear boundaries on fan behavior. This is even more true for fans who sit courtside with direct access to players, coaches and referees.

We would like to remind you that every courtside position holder has a set of rules to obey. These rules are clearly stated in the terms and conditions when purchasing tickets.

We are not against the fans who show passion, love and dedication, but we are definitely against those fans who are active in the game itself.

The swift reaction of Olympiakos, with the immediate life ban of the fan who used racist language against the referee Joseph Bisang, should be a point of reference from now on.

In recent years we have seen trends of disrespect, especially towards referees, which is unacceptable. Such behavior has unfortunately spread to many venues and we want to highlight our obligation as role models to our children and future generations of coaches, players and referees.

Coaches, players and referees stand together: Racism has no place in the EuroLeague!”
