Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva, 15, gold medalist in team figure skating at Beijing 2022, may have been caught in the anti-doping test for use of a banned substance by Wada (World Anti-Doping Agency), Russian media reported on Wednesday. (9).

The substance supposedly found was trimetazidine, a drug with a vasodilating function used to treat angina, chest pain caused by narrowing of the arteries that supply blood to the heart.

Valieva’s doping could cost the athlete and the Russian Olympic Committee the gold medal last Monday (7). It would have been for this reason that the medals ceremony, which should have taken place on Tuesday (8), was not held.

The Russian impressed in her presentation at the Games. She became the first woman to achieve a quadruple jump in the history of the Winter Olympics. After hitting the first one, Valieva attempted a second such jump and managed to complete it. She only went down on the third attempt.

With a score of 178.92 in her program, she was in 1st place with more than 30 points difference to the second place. Emotional, she celebrated the triumph.

Next Tuesday (15), the dispute of the individual test of figure skating of Beijing-2022 will start, for which the athlete is classified.

Russian newspaper RBC reported that the alleged doping check was carried out before Kamila Valieva won the European championship last month.

IOC (International Olympic Committee) spokesman Mark Adams told media outlets in Beijing on Thursday that he had “no comment to make” on “a situation that has all kinds of implications”. and described as “total speculation” the information that it was a case of doping.

“I imagine that all people [responsáveis] work as quickly as possible. We know that for athletes [afetados pela entrega da medalha]they want a quick exit,” he said.

If doping is confirmed, the episode will join the list of sporting scandals involving Russia and its Olympic committee.

In 2019, Wada punished Russia by banning the country from any international competition for four years, based on an accusation that its doping control agency (Rusada) was used to rig athlete exams.

After an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the Russians managed to reduce the punishment to two years.

Therefore, they participated in the Tokyo-2020 and Beijing-2022 Olympics under the banner of the Russian Olympic Committee and could not use the national anthem in these competitions – it was replaced by a song by Tchaikovsky.

The conditions stipulated by CAS in theory will also apply to the 2022 Soccer World Cup, in Qatar, which will be held within the period of punishment, although FIFA has never expressed a position on the subject and its implications for the sport it commands. Russia was the last country to host the World Cup in 2018.
