His memory Franz Beckenbauer who passed away last Sunday (7/1) at the age of 78 will be honored by the Bundesliga on the 17th matchday.

A minute’s silence will be observed in all matches between Friday (12/1) and Sunday (14/1) in memory of the German football legend, while players from the 18 participating teams will wear black armbands as a sign of mourning. .

THE Bayern, with which “Kaiser” flourished, will honor in a special way the great football player who marked its history. Tonight they will host Hoffenheim at the Allianz Arena, a stadium whose construction was promoted by the Kaiser when he was president of the club. In fact, special lighting was placed on the roof of the stadium with the phrase: “Danke Franz” (thank you Franz), as a tribute to everything he did for the most important club in all of Germany.

Beckenbauer was the first defenseman to win two Ballon d’Ors (1972 and 1976). He won the Champions Cup three times in a row from 1974 to 1976 and won four Bundesliga titles with Bayern and another with Hamburg at the end of his career.

With the national team, Beckenbauer made 103 appearances for West Germany. He played in three World Cups (1966, 1970 and 1974), and was named world champion in Germany in 1974, as a player. Later, in 1990 he repeated the achievement but as a coach. He also participated in two European Championships, winning the title in 1972.

Franz Beckenbauer is one of only three people in the world of football to have won the World Cup trophy as a player and, years later, as a manager. The specific feat has also been achieved by the Brazilian Mario Zagalo, who died last Friday (5/1), aged 92, and the French Didier Deschamps.
