Watzke: “We were one race short of the title but we made it through – The current Champions League format is boring”

by

A life in Borussia Dortmund has passed Hans-Joachim Watzkewho has announced that in 2025 he will step down from the position of CEO, in which he has been since 2005.

The German agent gave an interview to Athletic and among other things he said quite interesting things, both about her last year’s failure of Westphalia for the return to the top of the Bundesliga, as well as for the Champions Leaguewhich enters the new era starting next season.

Referring to Dortmund’s… thrashing in the final against Mainz, Watzke said that “Many people watched last year’s title race with Bayern Munich, it helped the popularity of the league.

I went to the Champions and Europa League final and people like Ceferin and Al Khelaifi were coming and telling me it was exciting.

It’s not just about who gets the title. Of course many want something different after so many years. But what was missing was a race to the finish.

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen something like this, Dortmund did it. We had a rough time but this season has been interesting throughout Europe. Bayern have everyone’s respect, to go against them until the end, you can’t be that bad.”

The German then referred to the changes in Champions League and commented how “anything new is viewed with suspicion in our country. For example, the new format of the event. I like it more than the former, which to tell the truth seems boring to me. It had become cold. You knew when the draw was made who was going through.

See the group with Manchester City, Leipzig, Young Boys and Red Star. Not a single match needed to be played to know the score. From next year it will be different. I don’t see much protest about it outside of Germany. A lot of fans say they don’t like it but if you talk to them about it, they don’t know what it is. I find it interesting we cannot reject what is new.

In 1-2 years everyone will see that it’s better this way, I’m sure. How often do groups have suspense? Only ours, this year. In six groups, we knew two games before the end who would go through. Next year, you might be 25th with two matches to go and still be able to qualify. And I find it more intriguing to play with eight teams instead of three.”
