In a press release from the government of Rome, it is underlined that “the Italy strongly condemns the Houthi’s repeated attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea and resolutely reaffirms its support for the right to free and safe navigation as provided for by international regulations.”

At the same time, the communique added that “against the unacceptable behavior of HouthiItaly supports the operations of allied countries, which have the right to defend their ships, in the interest of international trade flows and humanitarian aid.”

The Government of Rome also makes it clear that it welcomes the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2722 of 10 January 2024 and fully supports the efforts of UN member states to ensure free and safe navigation in the waters of the Red Sea.

In her announcement government Meloni it is underlined that “repeated violations of the arms embargo established by resolution 2216 (2016) must be condemned and all member states of the United Nations are called upon to respect the restrictions imposed”.

“It is of primary importance to ensure security in the Red Sea by preventing and combating destabilizing movements, which are not in the interest of either local actors or the international community. It is essential to avoid a further increase in tension in the region,” concludes the Meloni government’s announcement.
