This Wednesday (17), SBT signed a contract with Vasco for the rights to broadcast the club’s home games in the 2024 Campeonato Carioca.
The business model of the contract is that of advertising sales division. In other words, Vasco will be remunerated by the number of sponsorship quotas that will be sold by Silvio Santos’ broadcaster, without a fixed amount.
In total, there will be at least five games in the first phase. The debut against Boavista on Thursday (18), at 7:30 pm, will be the only game not to be shown. SBT enters next week, on the 25th, against Madureira. The narration is not yet defined.
Negotiations have been taking place since last week, but there were contractual issues that made the agreement take time to reach.
The games will be broadcast to parts of Brazil, such as Brasília (DF) and Belém (PA), in addition to the capital of Rio. The choice of seats will depend on SBT affiliates throughout Brazil. One of the games that SBT will be entitled to is a classic against Flamengo, in February.
It will be SBT’s return to the Campeonato Carioca after four years. In 2020, the broadcaster showed the final of the tournament between Flamengo and Fluminense that year, after contract termination made by Globo.
The game surpassed the 30 ratings mark in Rio de Janeiro, performed well in São Paulo, and opened SBT’s eyes to the importance of sports investment. From then on, TV decided to resume its football department.
For 2024, Band on open TV; SporTV on pay TV; and Canal Goat and Cazé TV on digital platforms also broadcast Carioca games.
The Carioca Championship has, in total, 11 rounds in the first phase – called the Guanabara Cup. The four best teams advance to the semifinals, which take place in round-trip duels.
Whoever passes goes to the decision, also played over two matches. The four clubs ranked between 5th and 8th place at the end of the Taça Guanabara will play in the semi-finals of the Taça Rio, which have no connection with the finals of the Campeonato Carioca.

25/1 – Vasco x Madureira, at 8pm (Third round)
3/2 or 4/2 – Vasco x Flamengo – Time to be defined (Sixth round)
7/2 or 8/2 – Vasco x Audax – Time to be defined (Seventh round)
24/2 or 25/2 – Vasco x Volta Redonda – Time to be defined (10th round)
2/3 or 3/3 – Vasco x Portuguesa – Time to be defined (11th round)
