Athens’ candidacy for the 2030 Gay Games

The International Federation of Gay Games announced today that the bidding process for hosting the 2030 games has closed, with the city of Athens among the cities that have expressed interest.

A total of 25 cities from six continents have expressed their interest in the 13th games involving LGBTQIA+ community all over the world.

These are games in which 10,000 members of the LGBTQIA+ community participate and according to the world federation, the games hosted in Paris had left a financial benefit 107 million euros in the capital of France.

The other 24 cities that have expressed their interest along with Athens are from Australia Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth, Sao Paulo from Brazil, Edmonton and Vancouver from Canada, Frankfurt (Germany), Auckland (New Zealand), Cape Town and Johannesburg (South Africa), Taipei (Taiwan), Liverpool and London (UK), Atlanta, Birmingham. Boston, Denver, Honolulu, Miami, Minneapolis, Oak Creek, San Antonio and Seattle (USA).

In March 2024 the 25 cities will have to send a complete application file, where, among other things, the sports they want to host in the games will be mentioned, how the financing will be done, who will be the organizing committee and the infrastructure of the cities to welcome thousands of athletes, female athletes, attendants and visitors.

The first Gay Games took place in 1982 in San Francisco, USA
