AEK turned the situation around against Panathinaikos (4-3) and finished in 2nd place in A1 women’s league

by

The great match between AEK and Panathinaikos for the A1 national women’s division stood out in the table tennis program on Sunday (01/28).

At the Stadium of Peace and Friendship, AEK found themselves losing 3-0 and with a sustained counter-attack turned the situation to 4-3 in their favor. They are now very close to securing 2nd place in the regular season as 3rd placed Panathinaikos are now two points behind them. At the same time, Olympiacos increased its undefeated streak for the 11th matchday and remains to make sure mathematically that it will go as 1st in the playoffs. In Men’s A1, Olympiacos and Panathinaikos added two more points to their credit in Veroia, with the former having the advantage in the tie after yesterday’s 4-3 and the total 31-29 in the sets of the games between them. In the men’s A2 he was defeated by Ifitos of Patrons, but DAO Tavros remains at the top, while Aris 2006 and DAO Tavros are still leading together with marginal victories. For another weekend, news also emerged on an individual level with Dimitris Papadimitriou of AO Tataula creating a surprise by defeating a European champion, the Croatian Tomislav Pukar of Olympiakos, with 3-1 sets!

The gre78 channel videotaped all the matches from the same venue, just as it videotaped the A1 women’s matches at SEF.

In the men’s A1, the matches of the 11th matchday were divided between Veria (Philippio gymnasium) and Rethymno (University gymnasium of the French). Roommates in 1st place Olympiacos and Panathinaikos easily confirmed the predictions against AO Tataula and OEA Thessaloniki respectively.

SUPER SURPRISE FROM PAPADIMITRIOU

Olympiacos again had Pukar and Monteiro in the trio and they were completed by Stamatouros, scoring two more individual victories. In the 3-0 teams, the experienced Papadimitriou, runner-up of Greece in men’s singles in 2022, played without stress against Pukar and achieved an impressive victory. He prevailed in four sets, caused a huge sensation for those who saw the match or heard about it and of course showed again the great potential of the Greek champions at the top level. The Croatian is one of the continent’s top athletes and in 2017 he was crowned European champion in the Junior Men’s singles. He is ranked number 49 in the world and just before Veria he had competed in Contender India.

In Rethymno, both matches had an interesting development. The local team defeated Aris with 4-2, returned to winning ways and continues to fight for the 4th place, while the match between Pera and AEK reached the double. The team from Palaio Faliro prevailed 4-3, as it had done in the 1st round, “caught” the Union in 3rd place and took a steady step towards entering the playoffs 1-4.

In the women’s A1, Olympiacos had no pressure to make 11 out of 11. They defeated Pera 4-1 with the evergreen Despina Dandoulas in the trio (she suffered the only defeat from Dimitra-Thomaida Tsekoura).

The big match took place on the next table between Panathinaikos and AEK. The “greens” made a perfect start and took a 3-0 lead. They didn’t have an easy game, however, as things initially went in their favor, they could then have a negative outcome and that’s exactly what happened. The second part of the match belonged to AEK, which tied at 3-3 and in the doubles celebrated the victory against Gerasimatou/Yovkova, just as it had happened in the 1st round. We remind you that the matches of the other teams at the weekend have been postponed.

In the men’s A2, the 11th matchday was held at SEF, while the meetings scheduled for Kavala all took place yesterday Saturday (except for those of Athena Magoufana, which were postponed). The high competition was proven once again, as Ifitos Patron forced the pioneer DAO Tavros to defeat 4-1. He got two wins from the Bulgarian Petkov, one from Giannucho and another one from the Cypriot Savva and climbed with one more race to the 2nd place in the ranking.

Along with him on 17 points is Elefsina, who beat Phoinikas Agia Sophia Piraeus 4-1 in a match for the top 4, where four of the five matches ended with a score of 3-2.

The A2 championship continued with the 11th matchday and later the coverage of the last outstanding with the postponed games of PKD Tavros. Two matches were decided in doubles and both related to the “battle” for 1st place in regular time.

The pioneer Aris 2006 escaped from the pressure of Chania and prevailed 4-3 when Papadakis/Kordoutis defeated Boulas/A with 3-1 sets. Nure. Earlier, Papadaki, Kalogianni and Kordouti each had one victory for the Voula team, while for OA Chania, Boula scored two victories and Noure one.

At the same time, the 1st DAO Tavrou beat the 3rd AO Tataula in the final. In fact, in the doubles, Georgiadou/Toundakova made a comeback from 1-2 to form a 3-2 set to the final 4-3 against Qi Xinyu/Hatzilygeroudis. In the remaining individual games, two victories were won by Georgiadou and one by Toudakova for DAOT, one each by Hatzilygeroudis, Isabaloglou and Qi for Tataula. The second team of Tavros, PKDT, also had a significant benefit on the day, which achieved two victories and entered the top 4 with a competitive weekend before the end.
