An Argentine soccer player died on Saturday on the outskirts of Buenos Aires during a brawl at a stadium where a second division league match was being played, local media reported.
The victim, aged 43, was stabbed in the chest just before half-time of the match won by local team Tsacarita against Deportivo Maipu (2-0).
According to the investigation, the man was involved in a general brawl that broke out in the stands before continuing into the corridors of the sports venue where he was fatally injured. He was taken to the hospital and died of cardiac arrest.
Police used footage from the stadium’s security cameras to identify the perpetrator of the fatal hit.
Authorities said the brawl did not stem from clashes between rival groups of fans, violence that has left more than 300 dead.
“This is a completely isolated incident that has nothing to do with fan groups” but occurred “after consuming a large amount of alcohol and drugsGuillermo Tsimandevila, head of the Organization for the Prevention of Violence in Sport, explained to the press.
