This year’s course of Sheffield United leads with mathematical precision to the return of the club to the second division of England. It has succeeded fewest league goals (22)while its defensive performance is the worst of Europe’s top five leagues.
After 26 matches, Chris Wilder’s side have conceded a total of 66 goals and collected just 13 points. They share last place with Burnley and a return to the Championship seems the most likely scenario.
The Sheffield club won promotion to the top flight last season when they finished second. In a total of 46 matches, he conceded 39 goals, a performance which, combined with the productive attack, led him to the Premier League.
The difference, however, between the two categories is huge and reflects the ease with which opponents breach their home this year.
Apart from Burnley, who have conceded eight fewer, there are other teams approaching this number in the other major leagues as well. Italian Salernitana and Frosinone are in the relevant category, scoring 53 and 55 goals respectively.
THE Almeria bottom of La Liga have conceded 54, with Germany’s Darbstadt completing the list with 52.
In Greece, Kifissia have recorded their worst defensive performance so far, conceding 51 goals.
