The national women’s saber team with Dora Goundoura, Despina Georgiadou, Marina Paizi and Athinaida Mavrikakis started with the right hand in the team competition at the “Acropolis” of OAKA. Although Georgiadou did not compete due to illness, she was present on the bench of the national team throughout the day, supporting her teammates. In the “32” scoreboard, the National Team easily defeated the Kazakhstan team with a score of 45-31. Next, they faced a demanding Hungary team to enter the round of 16 and were defeated 45-26.
The Greek women continued their course in the ranking matches for positions 9-16 and those who attended the OAKA had the opportunity to see a terrible spectacle in the match against China. With the score 40-26 in favor of China, Dora Gundura managed to “turn” the game to 45-44 with 19 (!) earned points in three minutes and put the National team on the board for places 9-12 .
Then, the Greek women were defeated 45-34 by Azerbaijan and 45-42 by Turkey, as a result of which they finally took 12th place out of 22 teams.
France and Ukraine were in the grand final, with the former emerging victorious with 45-30. In the “small” final, Bulgaria took another emphatic victory against Italy with 45-43 and climbed to the third step of the podium.
As in the individual event, the final match was refereed by the Greek referee of the Olympic Games, Andreas Douvis.
The “present” was given, as on the first day, by important officials of sports worldwide: The executive president of the World Federation, Emmanuel Katsiadakis, the president of the Ukrainian Olympic Committee, Vadim Gutsait, and Velitska Hristeva, president of the Bulgarian fencing federation and member of the FIE Board of Directors.
On behalf of the Hellenic Fencing Federation, the president, Ioannis Lignos, the General Secretary, Anestis Kostidis, and the majority of the board members attended.
