Relatives and friends will today say the last goodbye to 33-year-old Manolis Kritsotakis who “extinguished” last Sunday night, during the carnival, when the naval flare he tried to set off exploded on his body.
The funeral of the 33-year-old will take place at 15:00 at the Holy Church of Panagia tis Evangelistria, in Agios Nikolaos.
What did the autopsy show?
As Creta24 wrote, serious and extensive damage to the abdomen and vital organs of the 33-year-old man was caused by the deadly flare from its explosion, as can be seen from the autopsy – necropsy carried out on the body of the unfortunate Manolis.
A preliminary investigation was ordered into the case of the 33-year-old’s death.
According to information, the 33-year-old was on the pedestrian street of October 28 with seven of his friends and his partner. With two of them, his peers, with whom he had even been together since school, they began to take turns setting off naval flares.
According to the testimonies of people who were on the pedestrian street, the young people had already set off several, when the 33-year-old Manolis tried to “light” another one, but without succeeding. According to witnesses, it was then that he placed the flare on his stomach in an attempt to see what was happening. The dangerous explosive detonated, the deafening noise being heard quite a distance away.
It is characteristic that some of his friends, who were next to him at the time of the explosion, initially thought that they had been hit themselves. In seconds they realized that the young man was bleeding. They called for help.
The scenes that unfolded were tragic. His partner and another girl from the group who at that moment had moved away from the scene ran to see what was happening. 33-year-old Manolis was bleeding but conscious. A doctor and an apothecary who were nearby had rushed to help him. They were trying to use gauze to close the wound to stop the bleeding.
According to information, parts of the flare were stuck in the abdomen of the 33-year-old. The ambulance arrived a few minutes after the explosion, Manolis was taken to the hospital, where unfortunately he did not manage to survive.
His two friends were arrested, brought on Holy Monday to the prosecutor who prosecuted them for possession and use of sparklers and flares. A trial was set and they were released.
According to police sources, one of the two friends of 33-year-old Manolis was the one who had procured the flares. He handed over to the authorities the rest of the batch, which was found to contain expired flares. This even makes the police believe that the young man got them from a fisherman.
