Unpleasant events took place at the CONCACAF Nations League final in the early hours of Monday (25/3), where the USA prevailed 2-0 of Mexico.
Specifically, towards the end of the match, the referee of the match, Drew Fisher, bis interrupted the game due to racist slogans that could be heard from the platform. In fact, the second occurred in the last minute of stoppage time, a sign of the zero tolerance shown by the Football Confederation of North, Central America and the Caribbean. Besides, in the matrices of “AT & T Stadium” there were relevant warning announcements about the expulsion of spectators and also about the possible postponement of the game!
In fact, after the completion of the final, CONCACAF also issued a relevant announcement.
In detail, the announcement:
“CONCACAF condemns discrimination in the final minutes of the Nations League final between the men’s national teams of Mexico and the United States. Security staff at the stadium identified and ejected a significant number of fans and the referee and match officials activated FIFA protocol. CONCACAF launched its ‘What’s Wrong Is Wrong’ campaign in 2021, continuously urging fans to stop the chant, with regular digital communication and important on-pitch messaging before and during all CONCACAF events.
It is extremely disappointing that this issue continues to be an issue at some competitions, particularly in the context of the next two years which present such a huge opportunity to grow the sport in our region. We will continue to encourage fans to support their teams positively and with respect for the opposition and all participants in the game».
