A bigger rise, of course, in the ITTF world ranking was expected for Sgouropoulos, who at Feeder I in Beirut had the success of entering the positions 5-8 of the men’s singles. On Tuesday, in the weekly edition number 13 of 2024, the Eleusinian ace, who just on Sunday enjoyed his third consecutive Panhellenic men’s singles title, appears 111 places higher. He went to number 237 and again became the second Greek in the international evaluation table.
Immediately after (22-24/03), at Feeder II of the same city, our country’s all-time leading player, Panagiotis Gionis, was ranked 9-16 in the singles. He didn’t get enough points, though, moving up to number 94 from last week’s 100.
Next month a total of five of our internationals will compete in the German WTT Feeder and this is of course also related to a new search for points to claim, through the world ranking, the second Greek presence in men and women for the Pre-Olympic tournament of Europe (Sarajevo 15- 19/05).
The ITTF announced the rating table for the current week this morning. Gionis and Sgouropoulos were the only ones who participated in rated matches a few days ago. They knew the points they would get based on their placements in Lebanon, now they also learned how differentiated their position was.
Gionis gained 15 points and “descended” from the top 100 again. He came in at number 94 with 214 points overall and is still “chasing” more improvement so he can hope to qualify for Paris 2024 from this criterion if he falls short of his target from the Pre-Olympics.
Sgouropoulos secured 25 points from the Beirut Feeder octet. It has greatly improved its position and moved to number 237 from last week’s 348. In total he now has 47 points and surpassed Konstantinos Angelakis, who at number 308 with 29 points is now the third Greek.
In the women there were also changes, but for the blue and white colors that had no rated matches last week, the order remains the same. Katerina Toliou is at number 235, Elisavet Terpou at 350, Malamatenia Papadimitriou at 401 and Dimitra-Thomais Tsekoura at 412.
