To minimize the risk to athletes, the 50km cross-country ski race was shortened to 30km at the 2022 Beijing Winter Games. But that didn’t help Finnish skier Remi Lindholm, who after the race needed a thermal bag to defrost a particularly sensitive area of his body.
“You can imagine which part of my body was half frozen when the race ended. It was one of the worst disputes I’ve ever participated in. It was a battle,” he said. Lindholm resorted to the thermal bag as soon as he finished the race in Zhangjiakou City and said that as his penis reheated, “the pain was unbearable”.
The weather conditions of the dispute were extreme, with a temperature sensation of -26ºC and winds of up to 28 km/h. In addition to being shortened, the race had its start briefly postponed, due to the organization’s fear that athletes would suffer from so-called “frostbites”, burns on the body that occur due to prolonged exposure to cold.
Against these conditions, the protections used by the athletes were not enough. The Brazilian Manex Silva, who set a record for the country, competing in four disputes in the Winter Games, declared at the end of the 30 km that he felt a lot of pain in his legs and had the feeling that his face was “frozen”. Silva finished the race in 58th position and completed the course in 1h33min11s8.
It took Lindholm 1h15min55s6 to complete the circuit in 28th place, amid freezing winds and strong winds, which made his penis feel freezing. A similar situation occurred to him in 2021, at a competition in Ruka, Finland.
