Carlos Alcaraz defeats Diego Schwartzman and wins Rio Open

by

Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, 18, won this Sunday (20) the final of the Rio Open, played against Argentine Diego Schwartzman, 29, by 2 sets to 0, 6/4 and 6/2 and won his first ATP 500.

Alcaraz has been pointed out as a possible successor to Rafael Nadal due to his trajectory, which points to a promising career.

References to the owner of 13 Roland Garros trophies come from Toni Nadal, Rafael’s uncle and coach for much of his career.

In an article published in the newspaper El País in December, Toni wrote that “Carlos Alcaraz has become, thanks to his results and his game, not only the great hope of Spanish tennis but also Rafael’s natural replacement.”

Alcaraz reached the decision after having knocked out Matteo Berrettini, the tournament’s number one seed, in the quarterfinals, and Fabio Fognini in the semifinals.

The main event of the men’s circuit in South America, the ATP 500 level tournament started on Monday (14) and was held on the courts of the Jockey Club, in Rio de Janeiro.

After the 2021 edition was canceled due to the pandemic, the organizers’ expectation was to return with the most attractive list of players in the competition’s eight-year history, but in the weeks before the start of the tournament there were two important casualties.

First, Austrian Dominic Thiem, champion in 2017, winner of the US Open in 2020 and former number 3 in the world, withdrew through injury. Then the tournament reported that it could no longer count on Argentine Juan Martín Del Potro, another former number 3 and winner of the US Open, in 2009.
