152 killed in floods and landslides in Petropolis, Brazil

by

The death toll from floods and landslides in the Brazilian city of Petropolis has risen to 152, according to the latest report released by authorities today.

Rescuers and locals are continuing to search for the missing after the mud rivers that drowned the 300,000-strong city in southeastern Brazil. The country’s president Zaich Bolsonaru said the scene in the city was reminiscent of a “battlefield”.

According to the police, 165 people have been missing since last Tuesday, when the torrential rains that caused the landslide started. Authorities say it is now unlikely that survivors will be found in the wreckage.

From the corpses that have been retrieved from the mud, 128 people have been identified so far, including 28 children.

Earlier today, during a Sunday prayer in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican, Pope Francis expressed his condolences to all those affected by the recent natural disasters, referring to St. Petersburg and Madagascar, which were hit by catastrophes.
