Liverpool: First European treble at Anfield after Real

by

A terrible performance was given yesterday (12/4) by Atalanta, dismantling Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield. The Italians, against all odds, didn’t just win, but “forced” Jurgen Klopp to wonder by making the statement: “I didn’t recognize us».

Several records were broken in Atalanta’s triumph, with Gianluca Scamakka to become the first Italian footballer to score two goals in a European game at that stadium, while his team Gianpiero Gasperini became the third club after the Barcelona and Real Madridwhich wins for the second time away from the “reds”, after they had done it again in 2020, with 2-0 for the Champions League groups.

However, the biggest “first” that the team from Bergamo achieved is that it became the only team after Real Madrid to win by three goals in “Anfield”, one of the most difficult stadiums in the world over time. However, if you consider that “merinches” are a category by themselves in the European cups, having 14 Champions League wins, lead us to write about a “first”, while it is the second one that succeeds. And what is the proof? Madrid were not just the only team with this “record” at Anfield, but they have also twice!

The first was in 2014, when the champions of that season, Real, were beaten 3-0 by Liverpool in the group stage, with Cristiano Ronaldo to open the score with an assist from the former red and white player James Rodriguez and the Karim Benzema to score twice more in the 2nd half. In fact, this was the last year before Klopp took over the reins of the team, with Brendan Rodgers then on the bench.

The second time is fairly recent. Last season, the pair of finalists met in the round of 16. Klopp and his team certainly wanted revenge, after losing the final in Paris and managed to take a 2-0 lead in the 14th minute. Carlo Ancelotti’s team turned the tables with a … five-pointer, to win for the second time with a 3-goal margin at Anfield, after 5-2.

This season, Atalanta is not as impressive as in previous years, after all, it is in 6th place in Serie A, with 50 points and far from the 4th place it was aiming for in other years for a ticket to the Champions League. But she seemed completely ready to take advantage of the fact that Liverpool is fighting a sensational battle with Arsenal and Manchester City for the Premier League title and got a huge double, which sends her with … 1.5 legs to the semi-finals of the Europa League.
