Dimatos: “From the second qualifying round of the Champions League, the champion of Greece”

by

Definitively and irrevocably, the team that will win the Greek championship next Sunday (19/5) will start its attempt from the second qualifying round of Champions Leagueas mentioned by Andreas Dimatos. The UEFA executive explains how the situation is shaping up for each of the four teams still in contention for the title, stating that the AEK or Panathinaikos will probably be among the theoretically weak in all three draws up to the playoffs for entry into the newly created League Stage of the competition, while – on the contrary –Olympiacos and PAOK will be among the strong taking advantage of their high score.

In detail, what Andreas Dimatos mentions in his post:

The only thing that is now certain is that whichever team wins the 2023-24 Greek championship will start the summer from the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. Either it is AEK with its low rate (or Panathinaikos who mathematically still has chances) or Olympiacos with PAOK who have a higher rate and could take advantage of the rebalancing and the position of the holder of this year’s trophy, since both Real and Dortmund have a ticket for the 36 from their country’s league.

After the mathematical conquest of the Ukrainian championship by Shakhtar Donetsk and the Croatian championship by Dinamo Zagreb, there is no possibility of promotion either directly in the groups or in the playoffs in August. With the data so far, Shakhtar is promoted directly to the 36 and Dinamo takes its place in the playoffs.

The champions of Greece will start from the second qualifying round with the first match on July 23 or 24 (and second leg the following week) and will know their first opponent on June 19 (one month from the end of the Greek Super League) who will be either… a single (ie a team starting with him from the second qualifier) or a pair of the first qualifier (even better…) that will have come out of the June 18th draw!

Logic says that on June 18 and 19, all four Greek teams with European tickets from the domestic competitions will be in Nyon!

The difference is that AEK (or PAO) will probably be in the theoretically weak in all three draws until the playoffs for the qualification to the new League Stage of 36 teams, while Olympiacos or PAOK in the seeded teams of all three draws.

The champion of Greece with one out of three qualifiers will have secured his participation in the Conference League, with two out of three in the Europa League and with three out of three qualifiers he will represent our country in the new Champions League for the first time after a three-year absence!
