With the Greek mission in arms singing and celebrating six medals started in “G. Galanopoulos” of Loutraki the European Sumo Championships in three age categories K21, K23 and Men-Women organized by the Panhellenic Sumo Federation with the participation of 400 athletes from 15 different countries.

On the first day (Friday 24/5) the European Youth Championship (K21) was completed.

Greece had a very good presence celebrating 6 medals and good placements in almost all categories.

In the boys’ 70m category, Greece won two medals, a silver with Nikolaidis and a bronze with Karnavas.

In the +100 m category Michaelidis took the bronze medal, as did Gianakopoulou in the 70 m category.

Double success in the team for the Greek colors, since Greece climbed to the 3rd step of the podium in both the boys and the girls. The teams were represented by Michaelidis, Ismail, Ginis and Kolosentas (boys) and Gianakopoulou, Rotsi and Kartanou (girls).

“The Federation’s work is paying off”

The President of the Panhellenic Sumo Federation Grigoris Papadopoulos pointed out: “The Greek team started strongly. The work done by the federation – despite its recent establishment – is bearing fruit. Already on the first day we recorded 6 medals. We are very pleased with the effort of all our sportsmen and women. Organizationally, the first day is always informative in such an event, however, everything went flawlessly thanks to the planning and experience of the people of the Federation and we have already received congratulations from the European and World Federation. We invite the world of Loutraki and all people of combat sports to come watch the efforts of the athletes and get to know this beautiful modern sport with a history of hundreds of years.“.

The federal coach Sotiris Gianakopoulos pointed out:

We are proud as a country to organize this European. I am happy about our presence on the first day at K21. We won 6 medals and had a competitive image. Tomorrow at K23 the level will be even higher, but I am optimistic

The event continues with the European Youth Championship (U23), while it will conclude on Sunday with the European Men’s and Women’s Championship.
