Zenit: “Politics divides people, basketball unites”

by

The situation between Ukraine and Russia has spread to the whole planet and to every level. In a statement issued by St. Petersburg, Zenit condemned any involvement of politics with sports.

The announcement in detail:

Politics has nothing to do with sports.

This should be the basic tenet of any tournament or event. Regardless of any different political point of view, European basketball argues that the vision of basketball in Europe must be extended everywhere, without taking into account the political situation.

We respect the views of the clubs participating in the Euroleague and we will fight for them to be heard.

Our team has players, coaches and members from Spain, Greece, Lithuania, America, Lithuania, Ukraine, Moldova, Poland and Russia. We have a common goal… basketball!

Together, our families are going through the current situation and we want to move forward with the goals we have set, to be faced on the floor with the other Euroleague teams.

It is our love, our passion, We want to play!

The Euroleague in the previous “crisis” that it faced, coped and gave a new dimension to the development of the organization in a particularly critical period.

We hope for a meeting that will determine the continuation of the Euroleague. Russian teams have earned respect with their presence. We are optimistic that Zenit, CSKA Moscow, and Unics are determined to continue to prove their momentum on the floor. Politics divides peoplesport unites different people around the world in the name of common sense.

Please do not read our position in fragments, but let us create a common ground where peace safeguards the ethos of the sport.
