His coach Hercules, Dionysis Angelou, was “hosted” on EOK WebRadio and talked about the team’s attempt to get a wild card for the Basket League, his own future, but also the team’s effort in this year’s Elite League. He spoke in detail:
For this season: “Disappointment never leaves you. When you get so close to the big goal that has been set, disappointment remains. The… fund at the end is with a positive sign based on the pride we all felt for our effort, the players, the management, the support of the people. This leaves us with a positive aura and a sweet “taste” at the end of the season.”
On his feelings from this season: “It was so beautiful to work with the people I was blessed to work with on Hercules. It was very beautiful everyday life and interacting with people who you could see love the team and, despite the difficulties, want to see it return to where it belongs. Cooperation with people is what makes a season beautiful, but also the environment of Herakles which is always special and in the midst of all the difficulties you see a light glimmering, it is a great team, you see the world. It’s kind of special and you can’t forget it that easily.”
On whether this season is a legacy for Iraklis: “What happened this year is a legacy for the future and it’s the size of the team that helps with that. Whatever I asked of the children they did with religious reverence. There was a discipline and for that I thank the guys who, despite being an inexperienced and young coach, listened to me so consistently. This also shows something about the quality of the children themselves. When you’re dealing with experienced guys who understand basketball, have heard and experienced things at the highest level, it’s easier to do your job afterwards.”
On his future in the team: “Right now I’m not in Hercules in the sense that we’ve talked about the year or anything. The team has put a lot of weight on playing in A1, with some wild cards being the 13th or 14th team. He has given there his great base. There were some renewals, there are some guys who have a contract from last year. From here on, coaching wise I don’t know what the team will do, it also depends on which division they will play in. Right now I haven’t agreed to be next year.”
On his thoughts working on Hercules: “I feel very blessed to have worked at Hercules and been given this opportunity. Lefteris gave me the opportunity to be in the team, with whom we have a family relationship. The team looked at the men’s and women’s sections as communicating vessels, so from being an assistant in the men’s team I also helped the women’s team. When you are given the opportunity to help Heracles from whatever position he needs, you must “grab” the opportunity from your mind and try to help as much as you can”.
For the Elite League: “The arrival of the two foreigners was a great advantage for the level and the speed at which the level is played. Just looking at which coaches and players decided to take the step “down” and come to the Elite League shows that the league has gained a greater prestige. They didn’t drop their own quality either and raised the quality of the league as well.”
For experiencing the match in the presence of fans of both teams: “Last year we also made the final promotion to A1 Women with fans of both Aris and Herakles. It’s so beautiful that this happens, it gives you a whole new perspective on things. We also saw it in the Final-4 of the Euroleague. If the EEC, which organizes the Cup, and even ESAKE can play matches with fans of both teams in some games, even pilot ones, it will be very nice. These images are very nice and we must continue and whoever can take more initiatives in this direction”.
On whether he takes the point of view of his father, Vangelis Angelou: “My father and I worked together for 2-3 years. I also take his point of view because I respect him as a coach and as a father and I think that with the career he has made in basketball it goes without saying that I need the help of such an experienced person. You must ask and refer to people more experienced and with more knowledge than you. You constantly have to ask and get the opinion of people who are neutral to help you bring the best possible result for your team.”
