The language learning app Duolingo deleted references to Russia referring to what Moscow calls homosexual relations “non-traditional sexual relations”, after receiving a relevant warning from Russia’s telecommunications regulator after publishing content related to the LGBTI community that was labeled as “extremist”.

Russia last year expanded restrictions on the promotion of what it calls “LGBTQ propaganda,” further cracking down on the rights of the LGBTQI community, which the president Vladimir Putin he tries to present as proof of the moral decline in the countries of the West.

Russia’s telecommunications regulator, Roskomnadzorhad sent a letter to Duolingo, warning it against publishing material promoting non-traditional sexual relationships and propaganda for the LGBTI community.

Duolingo’s media and investor relations departments did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Russia has labeled the “LGBTQ movement” as extremist and those who support it as terrorists, opening the way for serious criminal cases against members of the LGBTI community and their supporters.

“The Duolingo company sent a reply letter to Roskomnadzor, in which it confirmed that it had deleted material promoting non-traditional sexual relations from its educational application,” Russian news agencies reported today, according to Roskomnadzor.

Russian courts have imposed fines to those who violate the “LGBTQ Propaganda” Act, including online movie distribution companies and their executives.
