Switzerland-Germany: Both for qualification, the “punchers” for the top

by

Crucial match in Frankfurt. Germany and Switzerland cross their swords (ERT1, bwinSPOR FM 94.6, sport-fm.gr) at the Frankfurt Arena for the 3rd matchday of the 1st group of Euro 2024.

The hostess with the 2/2 (5-1 Scotland, 2-0 Hungary) has sealed a ticket for the tournament’s knockouts and wants the point to secure top spot. On Wednesday she struggled for 67 minutes, but took advantage of her formidable attacking quality and did not pay for her defensive lapses. Musiala (22′) and Gintogan (67′), who are making an ideal start to the competition, scored their goals. Her captain made an excellent appearance. Musiala’s 1-0 comes from his own effort (he made the steal and the assist).

Switzerland has four points and wants to secure qualification for the knockouts. Which he will definitely achieve, as long as he doesn’t lose to Germany. They can achieve their goal if they lose, unless Scotland beat Hungary. They beat Hungary 3-1 on the 1st matchday, while there was a draw with Scotland (1-1). Yakin’s team pressed forward and equalized with Shaqiri’s goal in the 26th minute (having fallen behind with Sarr’s own goal in the 13th minute), and then created many opportunities, which he left unexploited. Two goals were disallowed for the Swiss due to offside.

It is possible that Nagelsmann’s composition will have several changes, since there are “yellowed” players in the team, namely Riedinger, Andrich, Ta, Mittelstedt. Zuber, who did not play in the first two matches, is a question mark for Switzerland and Shaqiri is expected to be at the top of the attack again.

The two teams have met 53 times (9-8-36), but never in the Euro finals.

Possible lineups

Switzerland (Murat Yakin): Sommer – Sarr, Akanji, Rodriguez – Froyler, Xhaka, Widmer, Ebisser – Edoi, Vargas, Shaqiri

Germany (Julian Nagelsmann): Neuer – Kimmich, Riedinger, Tha, Mittelstedt – Andrich, Kroos – Musiala, Virge, Guidogan – Havertz

Field: Frankfurt Arena (58,000)

Referee: Daniele Orsato (Italy)
