by

AEK celebrated its first post-war title today, July 3, 75 years ago, with the “Union” achieving the most adventurous Greek Cup victory.

The trophy in question is located at Museum of History of AEK in OPAP Arenawith the “yellow and black” informing about it.

AEK’s post:

One of the most adventurous Greek Cup victories for AEK was that of 1949. The opponent was Panathinaikos at Alexandras Avenue, in a match that was stopped at the 19th minute of overtime, after it had already gotten dark! The result remained a goalless draw and AEK were playing with nine players early on, as Xenos and Mageiras had gone off injured and substitutions were not yet allowed then.

A replay was appointed which also went to extra time, but this time the match ended normally and AEK was victorious with 2-1 and with the scorer of the two goals being the Thessaloniki striker Panagiotis Patakas.

It was AEK’s first post-war title and it went down in history 75 years ago today, on July 3, 1949. The trophy and some other rare documents from that time are on display at the AEK History Museum in OPAP ARENA. The Museum operates daily 10.00-18.00, except Mondays.
